Fredericton, February 4, 2012 –New Brunswick fine craft artisans won four awards at the Atlantic Craft Trade Show (ACTS) in Halifax on February 4-6, 2012. ACTS, a retail trade show, where buyers come from across North America to place wholesale merchandise orders for their stores, recognized the craft sector in New Brunswick as leaders in the field. http://www.craftalliance.ca/ACTS.php
Brent Rourke, woodworker from Bloomfield, New Brunswick brought home two awards on February 4, 2012, one for Outstanding Exporter and the other one for best Show Product. He has been exporting his Shaker Boxes and Carriers, among a wide variety of woodwork, for 12 years, with increasing success, and to an expanding market. As a master woodworker, each piece Rourke creates is natural, elegant, and functional and made from some of the finest woods available: cherry, walnut, and bird’s eye maple. Of all his pieces, the shaker boxes are a unique product based on tradition design that are a definite commodity on the wholesale and export market. Over the years he, his company, has made more the 40,000 oval boxes. His boxes are simple in their design while being functional and elegant, traditional and contemporary, all at the same time
Wendy Johnston Pottery and Art Effects Fine Crafts Gallerywon one of the Top 5 Outstanding Retailer Awards. Art Effects Fine Crafts Galleryis an outstanding retailer store not only because she promotes, presents and sells Atlantic fine craft in a beautiful Bed and Breakfast in Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick, but also because it serves as a hub of cultural activity, fostering an audience for fine craft and the visual arts in the area.
Ruth Jarvis Coleman, Metal Artist and Student at the New Brunswick Crafts College and Design won the Heather Stone Emerging Artist Award. Award was given to a student, Emerging Artist Showcase exhibitor who the jury considers to be the Heather Stone Emerging Artist of the Year. Product was judge on judged on the following: original design and creativity, workmanship and marketability. Ruth has spent her career working with families and young children in the field of Early Intervention. It was with a beginners mind that she entered the Jewelry and Metal Arts Studio at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in 2010. She discovered that she loves an organic and free form style and focuses it in her work design. She also reinterprets old objects and ideas and incorporates them into her designs.
These wins demonstrate the success of New Brunswick craft producers in the business sector. Makers of craft are self-employed entrepreneurs faced with the same challenges and opportunities as those in other sectors. These awards celebrate the strengths of the craft industry in the province. New Brunswick is the home of exceptional producers, as well as a community college that trains and supports the industry, and retailers that bring the work to public markets.
