Artisans work their magic at major show

Magic Hands Arts & Crafts fest brings together crafters from across the Maritimes

Crafters make magic with their hands. But unlike magicians, select Maritime artisans will reveal their secrets at the three day Magic Hands Arts & Crafts Festival in Moncton. They'll provide public demonstrations, in addition to showcasing and selling their wares.

"It brings the public in to see what we do," said Shawna Haines of Metal Opus Fine Jewellery, a Fredericton-based vendor attending the event. "And it gets us out there, it gets our names out there, makes us more recognized and it makes us able to make a living."

Haines, a graduate of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design's jewellery and metal program, opened Metal Opus in March, 2001.

Lolita McGraw, originally from Saint John, graduated from the same program and is Haines' partner and co-designer. Both create sterling silver pieces with their own unique spin.

Haines will be selling their work alongside a myriad of artists representing various disciplines. Every artist on the roster is a juried member of the NB Craft Council or another provincial craft council.

Show Associates Inc. is producing the Magic Hands Arts & Crafts Festival in conjunction with the NB Craft Council. The two had conducted informal talks for years, but their partnership was set in stone after the announcement of the construction of Casino NB. Invitations went out to key members of the arts and crafts community throughout the Maritimes.

Greg Turner, president of Show Associates Inc., said that there hasn't been a juried craft show in Moncton in almost 20 years.

"There was a need in the Greater Moncton Area to have a juried artists' show," said Turner. "There wasn't a proper venue to showcase their works until now."

Haines is an fan of the festival atmosphere, and she said that she's excited for the weekend congregation of crafters at the event.

"I love talking to customers, I love telling them how we make things and answering their questions and I also love talking to the other vendors," she said. "There's nothing like getting a group of crafters together."
